1. Use Public Domain Images

  • These images have no domain because they were either never copyrighted, the copyright holder released the image or their copyright expired.
  • Use websites such as Wikimedia Commons, Everystockphotos or Flickr Commons

2. Use Creative Commons Websites

  • Creative Commons license gives photographers the ability to release their photos to the public while still having some control over how the images are used
  • The types of creative commons license:
    • CC BY: You can edit and distribute the image, though you must attribute the creator.
    • CC BY-SA: You can edit and distribute the image, though you must attribute the creator and share/like any new creations made by the creator.
    • CC BY-ND: You can distribute the image but you are not allowed to edit the image in any way. In addition, you must attribute the creator.
    • CC By-NC: You can edit and distribute the image, though you must attribute the creator. You may not use the image for commercial use.
    • CC BY-NC-SA: You can edit and distribute the image, though you must attribute the creator and share/like any new creations made by the creator. It must not be used for commercial use.
    • CC BY NC ND: You can distribute the image but you are not allowed to edit the image in any way. In addition, you must attribute the creator. It must not be used for commercial use.

3. Use Stock Photos

  • These photos are photos that creators license out to anyone who is willing to pay their licensing fee.
  • There can still be stipulations, such as certain photos only being available for editorial use. This means that it cannot be used for a Facebook ad or a corporate home page.

  • If someone posted an incredible image of your product, message them, and ask for permission to reuse the image.
