1. Creating Your Website

Wix is a popular site builder loved for its ease and flexibility. They do the heavy lifting for you. To get started, you just sign up for an account. From the drop-down menu, choose to create a new site. You can then choose the type of website you want to create such as Beauty & Wellness, Designer store, or Business. Based on your choice, you can then choose a template. Wix has at least 500 templates.

To get started on WordPress, you need to first get hosted by another website. WordPress does not have its own hosting services. You will then have to get a domain name after which you can proceed to create your site following easy instructions.

Sign up, choose the type of website you want, select templates and you are good to go.

2. Customization

Wix features a drag-and-drop editor that allows users to customize their site, though this does come with some limitations.

There are over 7500 free WordPress themes that you can use to change how your site looks. You can then customize these themes according to your store, Further, you can install plugins to add a drag-and-drop editor for a different experience. Depending on your level of comfortability, WordPress is the most customizable option.

The site has fewer themes, though you can move items on your site or add and edit texts using a drag-and-drop editor.

3. Cost

You can choose various website pricing plans offered by Wix starting with the basic Connect Domain at $4.50 a month to VIP AT $24 a month. E-Commerce plans range from $17 to $35 a month. Hosting is free.

The WordPress software itself is 100% free, though the main cost is usually hosting. Additional costs you can incur include the domain name, premium plugins, and premium themes. WordPress is typically the cheapest option for new website builders.

Squarespace has four plans namely Personal, Business, Basic Commerce, and Advanced Commerce ranging from $12 per month for personal and $40 per month for Advanced Commerce. Users can opt to pay monthly or annually for the plans.

4. E-commerce

Wix is best for small businesses but lacks advanced e-commerce tools for functions such as tax and shipping.

This is the best site builder for large e-commerce sites. There are also various plugins that you can add, such as WooCommerce to optimize your site. WordPress is synonymous with e-commerce, making it the obvious winner in this category.

The design features on Squarespace are great but the site is more geared to small e-commerce ventures.

The Verdict

If you are looking to build a basic website in a short time, without worrying about hosting, then Squarespace and Wix are a good option. It will come at a small cost. However, if you want a more comprehensive online store with additional customization features, better e-commerce options, and at a lower cost, then WordPress is the obvious choice.
